The Art of Avoiding Ourselves

I have always found it fascinating how we all adopt myriads of ways to try to avoid facing the unhappiness we are feeling deep down in our lives. This is particularly so when the only real way to measure any form of success in life is by how happy we are feeling right now.

Avoidance techniques come in all shapes and sizes and can range from many forms of behaviours that we have become addicted to such as overworking, overeating, drinking alcohol, taking drugs, smoking, ideaological fanatasism, retail therapy and much much more. The essential underlying process is however the same in all of these behaviours – an attempt to stuff down our unhappiness for fear that we (or more particularly our egos) would not survive facing these feelings head on.

All that these behaviours achieve is a short term distraction from how we are feeling deep down about ourselves and our lives. Continue reading

The Nuclear Debate

Its not surprising that the nuclear debate has reared its head again with the problems being experienced in Japan at the moment.

What the current situation in Japan does show us is that nuclear power is highly unstable and damage caused by unpredictable natural disasters to these nuclear reactors will cause significant loss of  life and environmental destruction. This conclusion cannot be argued. We are now seeing the evidence of it every day as we are constantly being updated with an apparent deteriorating situation.

It is ironic that Japan of all countries given its recent history and the impacts of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War Two should now find itself in the position of having created its own nuclear incident by relying rightly or wrongly on nuclear power as the means to provide power to its people and businesses.

It is also interesting to note that while we seem to have the technology to build these reactors yet when it comes to dealing with problems generated by them our responses seem all but primitive in comparison. If the only workable response to such a potential disaster is dropping buckets of water on top of reactors then there is something seriously wrong with our thinking. If we cannot deal with the fallout (excuse the pun) then we should not be lighting fires in the kitchen! A Delicate Balance

Another global catastrophic event – another earthquake and a tsunami devastate Japan. The severity of the quake and subsequent tsunami surprised even the Japanese who are quite used to living within the “Ring of Fire” that encircles the Pacific Ocean.

As the human species has evolved technologically there has not been a parallel growth in our attitudes towards the respect for and preservation of our beautiful home world. The thirst for consumption has driven a mighty economic machine which has and continues to devour all in its path. Little thought has been given to the future of our little blue planet and the environmental impacts of our activities. Continue reading

Satisfaction Through Attraction

The title to this article may be misleading to those of you who were after something a bit more racey!

There is no doubt that when we take a close look at our history much of what we see is reflected back to us in our present moment. The simple reason for this is that what we continually pay attention to in our lives on a daily basis will eventually manifest and become our lives.

There have been numerous studies which have shown that the very act of observing something influences that which is being observed. We can and do continually influence our experience of reality by what we focus our attention on. Unfortunately what we pay attention to is often not what we want. More often than not we keep repeating patterns of thought that while they have not worked for us in the past bizzarely feel somehow strangely comfortable and reassuring. Continue reading

Just How Fragile We Are

Those of us living in New Zealand have been shocked and distraught at the recent devastation in Christchurch caused by the earthquake last week. The loss of life and destruction caused to buildings, infrastructure and business are beyond belief.

Ase we move through our daily lives we can become lulled into a false sense of security and get wrapped up in our little dramas. We often loose perspective about just how exposed we really are to the viscitudes of Mother Nature and our environment generally. We have lost respect for the blue planet we inhabit believing that we are superior and in control of things. How wrong could we be! Continue reading
