A Delicate Balance

Another global catastrophic event – another earthquake and a tsunami devastate Japan. The severity of the quake and subsequent tsunami surprised even the Japanese who are quite used to living within the “Ring of Fire” that encircles the Pacific Ocean.

As the human species has evolved technologically there has not been a parallel growth in our attitudes towards the respect for and preservation of our beautiful home world. The thirst for consumption has driven a mighty economic machine which has and continues to devour all in its path. Little thought has been given to the future of our little blue planet and the environmental impacts of our activities.

Plant and animal species become extinct invisibly to most of us as we are pre-occupied with our own little trivial dramas. We take for granted the fact that our continued survival is dependent upon things remaining the same when in reality they cannot. We expect the sun to shine every day. We expect the moon to hold the earth on its axis through its gravitational pull. We expect and take it all for granted.

Then one day what we have all taken for granted disappears and we ask how did this happen? It happened because we were all so damned busy minding our own business and seeking to satiate our greed and lust that we failed to do the business that was required to respect and protect our fragile world!

What is it going to take  for us to wake up to ourselves before it is too late?

We now hold the future of our world in the palm of our hand. Just how quickly things can go horribly wrong has become patently obvious not only with the loss of 10’s of thousands of lives but with the sheer destruction wrought by a single earth shattering event. Now we are forced to contend with the fall-out from our stupidity as the threat of a nuclear meltdown looms on the horizon.

Yet when we consider just how delicately balanced our world is it becomes quite apparent just how much we have taken and continue to take for granted. If we are not more careful the human race could end up like the dinosaurs EXTINCT!
